Dear Prospective Member:

We would like to thank you for your interest in membership with the Bassett Volunteer Fire Company. Our members have served the area for 61 years protecting property and lives in our community.  Being a  volunteer fireman is very rewarding and you must enjoy working under strenuous, highstress  environments and work at any hour of the day or night.  We offer no pay, but do provide all equipment  and free training.  Applicants must be at least 16 years old and live or work in the Bassett community.  Applicants are accepted every Tuesday night at 6 p.m. or the first Monday of each month at 7p.m. at the fire department located at 3735 Fairystone Park Highway. You can also call (276-629-5323) and leave a message on the answering machine to have someone meet with you to apply for membership.

Applying for Membership

You should visit the station to get an idea of how our department operates and to obtain an application for membership.  There is four different types of memberships at our department.  They are as follows:

Junior Membership-   Member must be at least 16 years old and have parent’s signed permission to become a Junior Member.  Must also live or work in the Bassett Community and be a good standing  citizen and never charged with a felony.

First Company Meeting

The Bassett Volunteer Fire Department has a meeting night every first Monday of the month at 7:30  p.m. This is an open business meeting to discuss the operation of the station and deal with financial operations of the department.

On meeting night, you are expected to attend the  meeting in order for your application to be presented  for consideration. You will be asked to leave the meeting area while your application is read to the membership.  The membership will at this time vote on your application.  If the application is approved  by the membership, you will become a  probationary member with the prospective membership you have applied for.  At the end of the meeting, you will meet with the Lieutenant to receive a pager so you  can start responding to calls. You will also meet the Chief Officers of the department to get an idea of  what is expected from you. No personal protective equipment is issued until your probationary period is completed.

Probationary Period

The first 90 days of your membership are  basically to give you a chance to see how our department operates and gives us an idea  if volunteer firefighting is something you truly desire to do. Your  name is run through the local and federal  law enforcement databases to ensure you have no prior criminal record during this time.  After this period is over, your application goes back through the business  meeting and  is voted on again. If the application is approved by the membership, you will be issued  personal protective equipment after the meeting and become a member.  You will also be issued a key  to the building at this time.

Required training

Each member, with the exception of the Support Membership, is required to attend a firefighting  course. The Firefighting 1 course is a firefighting beginners course and is offered at no charge at Henry  County Department of Public Safety. It is offered every year starting in January and usually finishing up  around May or June. This class normally meets on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 pm  and has some  occasional Saturday classes.

Thank you for your interest in the Bassett Volunteer Fire Department. This list is provided to give you a  basic understanding of the department’s membership process. Good luck!
