Henry County Public Safety maintains a state-of-the-art Police, fire and EMS training facility on DuPont Road in Henry County, Virginia  The 22,000 square foot building includes seven classrooms, shower facilities, two break rooms and office space for the Public Safety Staff, Western Virginia EMS Council and the Piedmont Regional Criminal Justice Academy.  On the grounds, there is a modern burn facility, a training tower, SCBA Maze Trailer, Air Bottle Refilling Station, several tanker and rail cars, and other various hazardous material training props.

Purpose

The educational demands are greater on emergency responders in today’s ever-changing environment of emergency services.  The Henry County Emergency Services Training Center provides a location for emergency services personnel to increase their knowledge and skills in professionally meeting their customers’ needs.  This is accomplished by offering a diverse selection of training courses, classes, and meetings for the many fields of emergency services.

Use of the Training Center

The Henry County Department of Public Safety administers the Training Center.  Education of emergency services personnel is the primary focus of the training center.  In addition to the offices for the Department of Public Safety and Police Acdemy, the Training Center provides two large classrooms, two medium size classrooms, and three smaller classrooms, audiovisual equipment, outside training props, break rooms, and restrooms with shower facilities.  Contacting Henry County Department of Public Safety at 276-634-4660 about reserving classrooms.  Class instructors are responsible for the training center during their period of usage.  Host organizations will be responsible for the facility when outside speakers are utilized.  USE IS LIMITED TO PUBLIC SAFETY RELATED TRAINING AND MEETINGS.

Training Center Guidelines

1.     In the case of a class meeting on weekends or on multiple occasions, the lead instructor will be given a key to the building and to the equipment storage facility.

2.        Equipment that is damaged through misuse or abuse will be repaired or replaced and billed to the individual causing the damage.

3.        NO alcoholic beverages, illegal substances, or weapons (guns, knives, etc.)  will be permitted on the premises of the Training Center. Exception may be made for training purposes, but they must be approved prior to class date. 

a.        On duty law enforcement officials are exempt to the weapons restriction.

4.        There will be no use of tobacco products (i.e., cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snuff, etc.) inside the training center.  A smoking booth is available outside on the north end of the building. 

5.        Food and beverages are allowed in the classrooms unless otherwise restricted by the class instructor.

6.        A phone is available in the kitchen, for incoming or outgoing local calls.  This number is  (276) 634-4635.

Reservation of Training Equipment

1.        Equipment is available to be utilized at our facility or on an outside loan basis.

a.        This can be accomplished by request through the EMS Training Coordinator.

b.       Request will be reviewed, and the training coordinator will verify the availability of the item(s), and will ensure the equipment is ready for pick up at the requested time. 

c.        Upon return, the training coordinator will ensure the items are in acceptable condition and that they are returned to the designated storage location.

d.       Any disposable parts will be provided by the training center.  Used disposable parts should be discarded and the new one put in place prior to the return of the equipment by the borrower.

Reservation of Classroom Space

1.        Request to use the Training Center for instructional purposes should be made through the EMS Training Coordinator. 

a.        In his/her absence, requests will be routed through the HCDPS office. 

b.       Request will be reviewed and the training coordinator will verify the availability of the facility.

c.        If approved, the building will be reserved on the Training Center calendar.  If not approved, the individual making the request, will be immediately notified.

2.        The individual making the request for the use of the facility will be responsible for the facility during such times as requested.

Parking

1.        Adequate parking is available in front of the facility.  Only vehicles being used in training is allowed into the training ground area.

2.        Designated parking for emergency vehicles obligated to on-duty Emergency Response is available.  This area is marked with red markings and signs.  Only the above-mentioned vehicles are permitted to park in this area.

Personal Property

1.        The County of Henry is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property brought onto the Training Center grounds. 

2.        It will be the responsibility of each individual to secure their belongings before coming to class.

Class or Meeting Cancellation

1.     The course instructor and/or HCDPS staff will make the decision to cancel classes due to inclement weather no less than one hour prior to the scheduled starting time for the session(s) in question. 

2.             Announcement of cancelled training will be made through all local media that normally provides weather-related cancellations.
