Late in 1951, members of the Martinsville Lions Club became interested in help for a life-saving crew. On January 15, 1952, fifteen men enrolled in a first aid course offered by the Red Cross. Through assistance from individuals, civic organizations, and private enterprises,much-needed equipment was acquired. The first ambulance was a 1951 Chevrolet panel truck. Mrs. Ina McKee, of McKee Funeral Home provided a meeting room in the basement and monitored the crew's "hotline." When the crew outgrew its facilities at McKee, they moved to space under Snow's Sandwich Shop. Later, Hooker Furniture donated land for a new building. On October 25, 1970, the crew moved into its present location on Hooker Street. The name was the department was later changed to the Martinsville-Henry County Rescue Squad.
