The Axton Volunteer Fire Department was officially organized in 1952. E.A. Sales was the first president and Roger M. Winn, Sr. was the first chief. The first piece of apparatus, a 1948 pumper, was purchased from Orens in Roanoke. Since there was no fire house, the truck was kept at R.L. McDaniel's garage until August 4, 1956 when the fire station was dedicated. In 1957 a 1955 Chevrolet tanker was purchased and placed in service. In 1958, the lot adjoining the fire house was purchased future use and expansion of the department. In 1983, the department used this land to build a new four-bay building with a meeting and training facility.
The department serves the eastern portion of Henry County, VA.
